본명은 Nathaniel Adams Coles이며 15살 때 학교를 중퇴하고 재즈피아니스트로 활동을 시작할 때 Nat Cole 냇 콜이라는 예명을 사용하다 1937년 기타리스트 Oscar Moore 오스카 무어, 베이스기타 Wesley Prince 웨슬리 프린스와 함께 결성한 재즈밴드 The King Cole Trio 킹 콜 트리오로 활동할 때 금색 종이왕관을 쓴 것이 계기가 되어 그 후 냇킹콜이라는 예명이 생겼습니다.
밴드활동은 1949년에 중단하고 1950년부터는 솔로로 활동하면서 수많은 앨범을 내고 히트곡을 남겼습니다. 5060 음악을 사랑하는 팬들은 냇 킹 골의 노래를 빠뜨릴 수 없을 정도로 다작을 했으며 우리 귀에 익은 곡도 많습니다.
